Dear Dog Lovers, You were wonderful about writing letters to City Council on the subject of tethering. As a result, Council Members began to understand the wisdom of the new law and voted for it in committee. Our last newsletter had a photo of dogs at play and readers noticed that they were wearing metal prong collars. See the article below to understand why this is unsafe. Halloween parties are turning up everywhere and we are listing a few more we have learned about.. Let us hear from you when you have dog news or concerns by email or at our website www.odogparks.org. | Dogs Welcome at Jack London Square Saturday |
Bring the pooch down to Jack London Square from 11-4 this Saturday for Paws on the Square for a pet owner education fair sponsored by Hopalong Animal Rescue, merchants of Jack London Square and even the Port of Oakland. Cats are welcome too so be sure to have your dog safely leashed. Join the fun for contests (get there a half hour before any contest you want to enter). Owner/Dog Look Alike at Noon; Dog and Cat Tricks at 1pm and of course, the Costume Contest at 2pm. This seems to be the first time that major City organizations have welcomed dogs in a social setting so show up and show your support. |
| Dog Park Safety Warning |
This photo shows what NOT to do at the dog park. ODOG Member Kasie Maxwell wrote us and said
"Please let your readers know that metal collars such as chain, pinch and choke collars should ALWAYS be attached to a LEASH, never left on the dog. It is especially dangerous when they are off-leash and playing with others with these collars on -- but it can also be deadly if they are left on a dog while they are alone in their yard or home. Once you have worked at a vet hospital (as I have) and seen the end results of what can happen with these collars (death, and horrible injuries which are totally avoidable), you cannot not fail to recognize this as a very important concern for all off-leash advocates.

| Leash Law Enforcement at Joaquin Miller |
Remember that a leash is required on all trails at Joaquin Miller Park. The re-activated volunteer bicycle trail patrol is assisting newly hired park rangers enforce saftety regulations on the trails at all parks, but especially at JM. Expect them to be on patrol especially on weekends. They can't give tickets ($271) but they will report the number and type of non-compliant dog owners to the parks department or the police department. Please don't give them a chance to report that there are self-righteous dog owners ignoring the leash law. If you want to walk off-leash go Redwood Park and other regional parks. |
