One of the best things about getting your natural pet food at Paws and Claws Natural Pet Food Store and Bath House is the community commitment that owners Diane and Ruth have to Oakland. Here they are at last year's opening party in Joaquin Miller Park.
Visit Paws and Claws to wash your dog and for food and supplies. Tuesday through Sunday at 2023 MacArthur, just off Fruitvale and around the corner from three great new stores: La Farine Bakery, Peets and the big Farmer Joe's. Phone 336-0105.

Dear Dog Lovers,
March started with a bang at the wonderful Grand Opening party at Mosswood Park and and a great small dog event at Joaquin Miller Park. The small dog parties are so popular that we've scheduled another Small Dog Happening in early April. Now we've had two weeks of fabulous dog walking weather. Spring means lots of grass on the trails for hiding poops. You can pretend you can't see them but they will turn up on the dry days of August. Please take time to pick them up now. Our Serpentine Prairie is already producing way too many foxtails and we know the regional parks refuse to consider the needs of dog owners when setting their mowing schedules so be careful your dog doesn't get those nasty daggers in paws, nose or ears. . Let us hear from you when you have dog news or concerns at odogparks@comcast.net or at our website www.odogparks.org. Emily Rosenberg, Publisher |
Good News for Hardy Dog Park
|
|
Dog lovers met with BART public relations people, representatives of the TWO children's playgrounds at Hardy Park and other park users to learn about the seismic retrofit plans for Hardy Park. Hardy is under the freeway and BART tracks at Claremont and Hudson in Rockridge. BART says that construction will start sometime in 2009 and that most of the dog park will be useable during the construction. The Hudson Avenue entrance will be closed for a few months and about 20% of the Hudson end of the dog park will be out of commission at that time. Overall, this is a much better outlook than park users had feared. BART commitments will be monitored closely by the Rockridge Community Planning Council, long a watchdog organization in the neighborhood.

Party Time at Mosswood Dog Run
|
|
A grand time was had by all. Neighbors got to know each other, dogs got to sniff, sniff, sniff and make new friends. Thanks to all the dog owners and city staff, including Mark Hall, Kathy Kleinbaum, Deb Spaulding and Marguerite Hinrichs for helping make this possible.

Mosswood Dog Runs are between the freeway and the tennis courts. The park is between West MacArthur, the 580 freeway, Webster, and Broadway. The dog runs are adjacent to the parking lot. Enter the parking lot from Webster, at 36th Street. If the lot is full you can park under the freeway just past the parking lot driveway.

Save A Life-Let Your Dog Be A Blood Donor
|
|
Imagine that your dog becomes extremely ill and needs a blood transfusion. You can't donate your own blood--it won't help your pets.
But you can offer hope of recovery to sick dogs and cats by committing your own dog as an occasional blood donor.
Dog donors should be 1-8 years old, 55 pounds or greater, current on flea/tick/heartworm preventative medications and......never have been pregnant.
The new community based canine blood donor program at UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital will screen your dog in their search for the "canine universal donor blood type--DEA 1.1 Negative" Dogs that pass the screening will be given free yearly blood tests valued at $300. All donor costs are paid by the vet hospital.
Call 530-752-1393 for an appointment or for general questions about the program. Watch the TV news video here.

Mosswood Parking Problems
|
|
Dog owners have been disappointed when they can't find parking in the Webster Street lot near the Mosswood dog runs.
We learned that there is usually plenty of parking except when the long-established Bridge Club meets at the Mosswood Rec Center.
Bridge Club use of the parking lot is heaviest at these times:
First and second Sundays 12-5
Tuesdays 10-3
Fridays 11-4
It appears that many of the Bridge Club people are elderly so if you and your dog can park on the street and walk an extra half block to the park, it would be appreciated.
