ABOUT ODOG

ODOG is the Oakland Dog Owners Group. ODOG advocates for more dog parks and off-leash space and to make Oakland and the nearby East Bay/ San Francisco area more dog friendly.

We help community members connect with government agencies that can give us access to public space where we can play with our dogs and help dog lovers stay in touch with each other through the monthly ODOG Newsletter.

City Stonewalls

Dog Park at Lake Merritt

The City of Oakland is continuing to Stonewall on re-approving this park. After demanding installation of plants to hide the fence they are now stalling because the irrigation system will produce too many weeds. Next, they are demanding an investment in a $20,000 concrete channel for the lawn mower OUTSIDE the dog park before they will let us build. Keep the pressure on by licking the links below to express your opinion to parks mangager and council members to let them know it is not fair to double the price of a project by coming up with new requirements four years after it was approved. and funded. Send emails to Dana Riley, Assistant to Director of Parks and Recreation and to Council Members Nancy Nadel and Ms. Pat Kernighan and Rebecca Kaplan .

You can see a preliminary layout (not yet approved) which features big and small dog areas, ADA access and plenty of space.

The dog park, which was approved in 2006 but never built, is to be located in Astro Park which is between Splash Pad and the little Lakeview Library.

There will be plenty of room for soccer, volleybally, etc and the kids' area will not be affected (except that the kids are thrilled about being able to visit more dogs at the park).

at 37th and MLK

The fence has been installed but the gates are not on site yet. We think this park will be ready in Fall 2010 and we are looking for some dog owners to help plan for the opening party and set the code of conduct.
